Chapter 16

They headed over to the long table set up with several items donated by the members of the community. Ashley’s eyes filled with tears, making it difficult to see some of the items as she looked them over. What a great thing for a small town like this to help out a little four-year-old and his family.

“Look at this adorable sign, Ash,” Quincy said. That helped clear away some of the emotion.

“I didn’t know you were still in town, Q.” Ashley stepped forward and picked up one of the large candles, breathing in the lovely pine scent.

Quincy’s arm went to her hip, and she tapped Ashley on the shoulder. “What are you talking about? Jason and I have been enjoying the snow up in Jackson, and when we saw the sign about this fundraiser as we came back into town this afternoon, I told him we had to come.”

Gritting her teeth, Ashley said, “Why are you not in Texas? Why are you waiting here?”

Quincy’s expression changed, her jaw tightening. When she spoke, her volume lowered to the point that Preston didn’t even turn. “If I leave, I won’t know where you’re off to next. We’ve got to fix this, Ash. We need our business to be running again.”

As her mind went through a string of possible reasons why her cousin was so desperate for the blog to be up again, Ashley took one of the pens from the table and wrote a sum of money for one of the items on a small piece of paper, making sure to hide it from Quincy. She stuck it into the box and took a few steps to look at the prize Preston was toying with.

A hand gripped her upper arm, and Ashley turned to look at her cousin. “Don’t just walk away from me, Ash. We’ve been besties since forever. Since when do you keep secrets from me?”

Ashley kept her voice even and low, wanting to get her point across. “Since you took my fiancé from me. What is so important that you need me to work on? You can post things just as well as I can.”

Quincy worked her jaw back and forth. “We know what kind of engagement I get on posts. Our ads aren’t making as much because people have already seen what we’ve got posted.”

Pointing her finger at Quincy, Ashley said, “You’re worried about money?”

“We just don’t want to lose traction,” Quincy said, tucking her hair behind her ear. “You know how the algorithms are on the internet and our social media. Quickstagram did another update, and we’re going to need to start posting again.” The entire time, Quincy wouldn’t look Ashley in the eyes, and she knew that wasn’t the entire story.

“I’ll start posting again when I’m ready. For now, I’m taking a vacation, which is what normal people do around the holidays.”

“Vacations are your job, Ash. I don’t know what your problem is. Take pictures of what you’re doing now, at that lodge. Just start posting something.
